I work for a call center and I work with a 7942 Cisco IP Phone. I’m always impressed by the quality of the phone. The feature that I love a lot would be the speaker phone. I thought it would be a perfect addition to my room and so I searched for it online and see where I can get a good deal. I was lucky enough to get multiple phones for a cheap price on Craigslist. At that time, my dad was telling me that you can convert SCCP to SIP only if you are a Cisco Certified so I had to do some digging online. I found a lot of tutorials on how to do it and sites where you can download firmwares and upgrade it via TFTP.
I have read a lot of tutorials and all of them seemed to vary. I followed one after another until I got the hang of it. (trial and error, I know it is not good especially when messing with firmwares. I do it a lot..)

This procedure changes Network configuration, Device Configuration, Volume Settings and Contrast Settings to their default values on the Cisco IP Phone 7940/7960.

This process is a requirement before any firmware upgrade is done with a Cisco IP Phone. If you want to know more details on how to upgrade your firmware to SIP firmware, click here for my tutorial.
Boot up your phone. You can use either PoE or a power supply. I used a power supply without plugging any internet connection. It will display “Ethernet disconnected.” You will just then wait for it to boot up. It might say “Configuring CM List“.
Press Settings -> Firmware Versions
Under Application Load ID, you will see your firmware version.
It looks like this. Mine is P0S3-8-12-00 means version SIP 8.12.
SCCP firmware: P003xxyyzzww: where x represents the major version, y represents the major subversion, z represents the maintenance version, and w represents the maintenance subversion.
SIP firmware: P0S3-xx-y-zz: where x represents the major version, y represents the minor version, and z represents the subversions.

I recently bought yet another Cisco IP Phone from 7940 from eBay. Usually, I don’t buy used electronics from eBay because I want to check and test any device before I buy it. I know once you commit buying on eBay you can’t back out like any other online shops but I got a good deal for it. And all you need from an IP phone is for it to boot up and work, the outside blemishes wouldn’t really matter. (For some but I hate scratches) I like buying from Craigslist. Simple, you can check it out before you buy it.
When I received my Cisco phones, one of the rear stands weren’t holding when you pull it down. Normally, it will lock in place but this you have to play with it til the lock goes in a certain position. This happens when someone does not know how to unlock the stand and forces it up or down. At that point, I really did not know the mechanics inside it and once I noticed that, I obsessed about it and the only thing I could think about was, “is it repairable?” I like repairing things and the feeling I get after I succeed! Again, it was time for me to research and learn. Google is my main resource nowadays. It is sad but it helps me learn.
